There is no swifter way to shift your energy than through the power of song.
My sister Lisa G Littlebird said this several years back and upon hearing it I immediately recognized it as truth.
But why…?
Why is that actually true?
I mused that it could be the content of the songs, it could be the fact of oxygenating my brain and blood, it could be the pure pleasure of music as medicine…
Then, I recently read “Burnout” by Emilie and Amelia Nagoski.
The book teaches about the importance of “completing the stress cycle” on a daily basis. Stress is not evil. It is biologically wise, serving an importance purpose of survival. However, in our modern era, stress tends to run rampant in our news feed, in our friend circles, and in our work environments. The simple fact of being a parent comes with it’s own daily supply of stressors!
So the mission is not to avoid stress. That’s improbable and not realistic.
The mission is to complete the stress cycle on a daily basis.
In the book, the authors discuss 7 tried and true ways to complete the stress cycle, thus allowing our nervous system to return to a parasympathetic state, or homeostasis.
When I heard these 7 methods, a light turned on in my brain!
SINGING checks 3 of the 7 boxes that support our bodies to complete the stress cycle!
Physical activity ✅
Breathing ✅
Positive social interaction
Laughter
Affection
A big old cry
Creative expression ✅
No wonder singing is the quickest and best way to shift your energy and your mood… it is a triple decker “complete the stress cycle” sandwich!
And if you sing with other people… add at least one more to that list.
Heck, I’ve had singing sessions where I literally could check every single method on that list off.
So, the science speaks. Don’t take it from me.
